How to Tap Into Your Intuition

How much do you trust your own intuition right now? We all have an inner voice that is meant to guide us in our choices. Trouble is, most of us don’t actually listen to it or don’t know how to use it in the right way.

Not used to tapping into your inner guidance? You probably agonize over decisions and question if you’ve made the right choice, right? If you’re nodding ‘yes’, using your intuition will definitely benefit you. Now is a great time to learn how to trust your inner wisdom and build a stronger relationship with your inner self.

What is intuition?

Before we dive in any further, let’s talk briefly about what intuition is. In a nutshell, it’s all about the ability to know something without having to consciously think about it.

When you need to make a decision, you can trust your inner guidance to bring you to the right decision. The idea is that your intuition guides you in making the decision that is going to be most helpful for you.

Have you ever felt a gut feeling about something, even though there wasn’t any logic attached to this? You were most likely listening to your intuition, even if you didn’t realize this at the time!

And if you didn’t go with that instinct, you may have found that it led to some pretty negative sensations. Ever felt sick after you’ve made a decision or just a sense that something bad is about to happen? This can because you’ve gone against your intuition and made a different choice- often one that won’t work for you.

Why your intuition can go AWOL

For most of us, life is super busy and comes with tons of stress. This can feel overwhelming and hugely confusing. The end result? There’s not a ton of potential for tapping into our inner guidance and it’s hard to connect with your inner self.

This also makes it super easy to fall into the trap of negativity and comparing yourself to other people. Often, this will be a misguided attempt to try to find out more about who you are and your “true” self.

How to tap into your inner guidance

Don’t worry if you have no idea where to start with using your intuition. It can be a big challenge to trust your gut instincts. Even more so when you’re super used to weighing everything up and coming to an “informed” judgement about what to do.

Have you been finding that going down the “logical” route hasn’t been working that well for you? Letting your intuition guide you can bring much better results.

Here’s some good news: it’s easier than you might think to relearn how to tap into your inner wisdom.

Find yourself a comfortable and quiet spot that you can relax in. Spend a few minutes focusing on your breath and ask yourself the question that’s on your mind. Move back into meditating and focusing on your breath. It’s okay to acknowledge any thoughts that come into your mind. Don’t give them any labels or judgement; just let them pass through. After a little while, ask yourself the question again. It might surprise you to see what comes to mind this time.

If the answers don’t spring to mind, try a “brain dump” in your journal afterwards. Just get all of your thoughts out on paper and see if this helps to shed any light. This stream of consciousness might help you to find the answer.

Tuning into the thoughts, feelings and emotions that come into play is another good move. As you get more used to doing this, you may pick up on things that you ignored or didn’t notice before. Zooming in on these gives you a clearer path to follow when you’re trusting your intuition.

Ditching distractions is super helpful for tapping into your intuition. Do you spend much time in the present moment in the average day? Are you constantly distracted by devices? Try taking some time to be more mindful. This helps to clear your mind and paves the way for speaking to your intuition.

Tapping into your inner guidance is only half of the story though. You have to learn to trust it too! Over time, it will become more normal to you. The trick is to practice it regularly and get used to letting your intuition guide you.

You can do this for any type of decision – big or small. Start off with smaller decisions with less serious consequences. From there, you can increase trust in your inner guidance and let it guide you for bigger decisions.
